We would like to inform all visitors to our blog that we will be in California on a fundraising trip later this year. We plan to be in the San Francisco from 7 to 14 November and in Los Angeles 14 - 20 November. We are already busy planning various events. If you are from California we would certainly be grateful for ideas or input regarding our visit - and you can also send an email to us if you want to be invited to any of the events being arranged. Our research on elephant cognition and communication, our scientific and popular publications, our advocacy work for elephants, our website updates are all dependent on individuals like you. Our blog is just a tiny window into the work we do and we encourage you to visit our website, www.ElephantVoices.org to get a better picture. To continue to protect elephants we need your support. Best wishes, Petter and Joyce

Great to see you two planning to share more research and spread word for the cause in an upcoming trip to the states. On another note, I recently read that KWS is leaving Amboseli. If so, what impact might that have on you, the elephants, and your important work there? It struck me as a very disturbing development. My understanding is that KWS has been the armed vanguard of defense and protection for these animals. If this is the case, who or what is to replace them and guard the ecosystem? Best Wishes -TheTeach

Hi TheTeach! The Amboseli situation is still very unclear (for us) - and we are awaiting further input. The possibility of the district taking over KWS’ role and responsibility have been looming for some years, though, and rumors have been flying. In principle more local “ownership” could be positive, as long as the area and it’s wildlife is being managed professionally and not based on outside politics. We’ll be back when we learn more.
