True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind’s true moral test, its fundamental test, …consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. — Milan Kundera, from The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Joyce, this might cheer you up a bit. When I walk my dog in the morning, I check all the dumpsters at my apartment complex. To make sure no raccoons are trapped in them, it’s usually the baby raccoons who can’t climb out. I’ve hidden a two by four in the nearby woods, placed at a slant in the dumpster, even the babies can climp out to safety! You should see them when they scamber away to freedom, makes me feel good.

this is from my favorite book…i passed it in the bookstore the other day and thought that maybe i would pick it up and reread it as its been several years. i totally dont remember that quote and look foward to finding it again. that book has so many beautiful quotes. i have a profound interest in animals and i am looking to further educate myself and hopefully one day soon to travel to africa. i am so very glad i found this website and the milan kundera reference. he has another line from the book which i cant remember exactly…something about coincidences and that you cant ignore them because life is more beautiful with them…thats how i feel about finding this website and the kundera quote here. i look foward to learning from you and hope to give back something too.
